Our Process

HOW DO I ACTUALLY BUY A VEHICLE?

The Process – From choosing your vehicle to taking delivery

We keep it as straight forward as we can make it for you, but a lot goes on in the background which not only enables you to buy a decent vehicle but keeps the whole process legal.
Always feel free to ask all the questions you want answered – we realise that any purchase is a major event and getting the right vehicle is important. Throughout the process we offer as much support as we can and expect questions and happy to answer them.

HOW DO I ACTUALLY BUY A VEHICLE?

The Process – From choosing your vehicle to taking delivery

So…the simple version is this.

  1. You find the car on our website that is of interest and contact us about it. If you can’t see the vehicle you particularly want we can almost always source one so do ask.
  2. We can quote for alterations and additions such as snorkel, winch etc. at this stage.
  3. We will confirm availability and the vehicle price. This will include a donation to charity, carbon offset for 5 years and the shipping cost.
  4. To move onto a purchase, we will require some information about your organisation and a formal order to enable us to present you with an invoice.
  5. Payment is due on receipt of the invoice to be paid in full by bank transfer (in some cases a deposit may be required to secure a vehicle).
  6. Once payment is received the vehicle becomes yours and will be prepared and booked onto the next available sailing.
  7. You will then receive a draft Bill of Lading (BOL) to check the details (accuracy on this form is essential).
  8. After confirming the draft and the ship has sailed you will receive the original Bill of Lading by courier. You will need to present this to the local port authorities.
  9. We strongly recommend that you recruit an agent in the port to help clear the vehicle once it arrives. There will be import duties, taxes and port fees locally to pay which is on top of the purchase price. In most ports we can recommend a qualified agent working to ISO or UK Legal standards which gets you past the last stage remaining compliant to all the rules. You are not obliged to use our suggested agent.
  10. Once the vehicle is clear of the port and you have registered, taxed and insured it the process is complete……………we wish you safe driving and a productive and reliable vehicle.

WHAT DO WE DO THAT YOU DON’T HAVE TO

The vehicle itself

After doing this for years we have built up contacts and knowledge and developed our own supply chain. Finding the right vehicles in the first place is time consuming and needs to be done with care, examining the vehicle in detail is a complex process, making sure it is physically in good condition and checking any history, making sure it has no finance outstanding, check Police records that is not stolen and it can be exported all has to happen before it can be exported.

WHAT DO WE DO THAT YOU DON’T HAVE TO

The money transfers

As soon as international money transfers are involved, any purchase of $10,000 requires compliance with money laundering and financing terrorism regulations. Get it wrong and the bank may freeze your bank account! Dealing with high value items such as vehicles and shipping them to Africa sets off alarm bells. This requires us to act with care and to investigate and report back the UK Government in detail the transaction, details on the source of the vehicle and previous owners and on you (our customer) to prove that the customer is a legitimate organisation and the money being used has been legitimately acquired.

International corporate banking

Guarantee Trust Bank UK Ltd

LISTED ON THE LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE

Banking in London with an international bank gives great flexibility and we can accept payments with ease direct into our Sterling, US dollars or Euro accounts in the UK.

Through GT Bank’s international network they can help facilitate money transfers and even support requests to finance your vehicle purchase through your own local bank by communicating directly with them. They are very supportive of local NGOs and those involved in development.

WHAT DO WE DO THAT YOU DON’T HAVE TO

The paperwork and shipping

Once we get past checking the car, the legalities and finance we can move onto sending the vehicle to your nearest port. Sorting out the export documents for the vehicle, de-registering it, moving it to the port, finding and booking a space on a ship is quite complex. On top of that we organise the carbon offset package and ensure the donation to the charity gets sorted.

Can't see the vehicle you want?

If you can’t see the vehicle you want, contact us about our vehicle sourcing service, or browse all available vehicles.

A huge portion of the vehicles we provide are sought out specifically for customers based on their requests. 4WD minibuses, trucks and more. If you can’t find what you’re looking for on the site, don’t hesitate to get in touch to see what we can do for you!

JMC Vehicles

The JMC brand from China is not a household name for most of us but alongside JMC is one of the biggest names in the auto industry - Ford, who own a big chunk of JMC in China.

In fact JMC manufacture the Ford Territory, the Transit van, the Torneo van, and the Everest SUV all under the Ford badge.

We have chosen to promote just one vehicle for now – their pick up – the JMC VEGUS.

Among all the vehicles we have seen – if you just need a value for money workhorse we think that this is a real contender.

It shares the Puma engine that has been in the Ford Transit for years, the London taxi and the Land Rover Defender to name a few, so the engine is well tested.  The Vegus also shares a Ford Transmission system, Ford suspension so this is not an unknown vehicle really.

Comes with a healthy guarantee and we are having the vehicles made to order so we can request the fuel system can work with the local African fuel quality and you will enjoy a fuel system capable of handling the not so great fuels available in Africa.

Foton Vehicles

The Foton range from China just about covers all the options with a pick up, minibus, SUV plus a host of vehicles from tractors to trucks and buses.

Foton really stand out as the Chinese brand that seems to have had more than other Chinese brands and successfully trading in Australia, New Zealand, most of South America and Asia.

Surprisingly, they are not that Chinese actually…They use Cummins diesel engines, Getrag Ford make the transmissions, Borg Warner make the transfer case and Dana make the axles.

Owners find them good value for money and they will eventually become a worldwide and well-known brand supplying pick-ups, SUVs, mini buses, trucks, tractors and coaches.

Buy them new and they compare in price to many more well-known brands when second hand and come with a healthy guarantee.

At West Africa 4×4 we are delighted to be able to supply them and see them as a great option if you need a vehicle for a project and you don’t have a huge budget.

At the moment we are working on each order on a case by case system and very happy to provide a live quote for your particular location and need, so feel free to ask the questions you have.

Approved Dealership Vehicles

Buying a car approved by a main dealership has to be the simplest way to buy a top quality car with confidence - fit for Africa.

A transparent off the shelf transaction, on a budget, we are combining maximum quality with the confidence and expectations associated with some of the most trustworthy names the industry.

It minimises exposure for your organisation, saves time and resources, and knowing that both car and dealership are excellent you can confidently expect the car to have a good working life ahead.  The cars are in stock and West Africa 4X4 can deliver them to you at a more cost effective rate than arranging it yourself.

Before being presented by a main dealership, all the vehicles offered were carefully chosen to start with and have passed a thorough test and servicing procedure.  Looking great and knowing they are mechanically sound, you really can just choose the one you want and place your order.  We will then secure it for you, sort the paperwork, the shipping, and have them delivered to West Africa.

West Africa 4X4 is committed to working at the highest ethical and quality standards and the principal of having vehicles thoroughly examined means we don’t expect unwelcome surprises later on.  When you ‘Browse all vehicles’ you will see others professionally vetted and scored – note that we only offer the ones that scored 5/5 mechanically, but for peace of mind and about $150 you are welcome to have a vehicle retested.

Regarding commercial vehicles the procedure is slightly different by providing a final vetting (to the same standards) as part of the purchase procedure.
